DJ Frane Awareness Week!
The title above may be tongue-in-cheek, but Morphizm pal DJ Frane sent it to me this morning and it cracked me up. So yeah, next week the sample-happy funktronica turntablist is hitting up different hotspots in Los Angeles, to rep his newest effort Journey to the Planet of Birds -- and ignite the house party. For those of you who don't know DJ Frane, he's got two releases of hyperaural beatsmithing already beneath his belt, Frane's Fantastic Boat Ride and Electric Garden of Delights, both of which kick holy sonic ass. But his new disc is just as much a doozy, especially if you like instro-hop as much as I do. After hearing people sing about the same shit over and over again (don't even get me started on rap), it's nice to work furiously to addictive, compelling soundtracking for a change. Which is indeed what I do, as Frane has been a regular in my iPod rotation since another Morphizm pal, Angry Black White Boy and A Fictional History of the United States With Huge Chunks Missing author Adam Mansbach, turned me onto him in Berkeley a couple years ago.
So get thee to a club and party, if only to celebrate the Democratic takeover of Congress. (That hangover should be gone....now.) Here are the dates. The price? Free, baby, free. Spin it!
MONDAY NOVEMBER 13
at CARBON
9300 Venice Blvd.
Culver City, CA
FREE!
Hosted by the one-and-only DJ Dâm-Funk. A night of all 70s-80s funk and soul! Between Robertson and Overland, across from In-N-Out. Poplocking encouraged.
WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 15
at GOOD LUCK BAR
1514 Hillhurst Ave. in Silverlake
Los Angeles, CA
FREE!
It's "DODGE THE DRAFT" night! I will melt your face and tickle your earhole with some existential turntablism for the body and mind. And check out resident DJs Evan and Julian, who express their countercultural dissent via an eclectic array of psychedelic rock, downtempo and electronica, resonating pleasantly throughout the sexy, Chinese decor of this Silverlake lounge bar.
For more, stop by DJ Frane @ MySpace, and tell him Morphizm sent you.
