Free Elvis!
No, I'm not talking about that Memphis cracker that Public Enemy's Chuck D once famously called "straight-up racist...simple and plain." To which, that minstrel idiot Flava Flav responded "Muthafuck him and John Wayne!" (Whereas Wayne, most famously, was repeatedly called "a fag" in the immortal film Repo Man.No, I'm off the tangent and talking of Elvis Costello, who is the subject of a ten-part podcast series on iTunes covering his first ten years in music. Or, what I call his ten best years in music. The podcast series runs through August 21 and is free, so damn the torpedoes and get there.
The reason? Marketing, people, marketing. Costello's greatest-hits retro The Best of Elvis Costello: The First Ten Years is out now and there for the casual fan who's afraid to dive head-first into Costello's extensive ouvre.
But why not? Costello is worth it. Elvis Presley? Not so much.
