Pinback on the Attack!
Anyone who reads Morphizm should know how much we love the San Diego triad created by Pall Jenkins and Zach Smith, head honchos for the heinously underrated art-rock outfit 3 Mile Pilot. When the band splintered around the the turn of the millennium, two great bands were formed: Pall's Black Heart Procession and Zach's Pinback, pictured above left. While it's fair to say that both bands became more popular than 3 Mile Pilot outright, it would be a mistake to say they are better. That theory is being tested with every new Pinback disc. Their newest and latest drops on September 11, of all days, and like their previous effort Summer in Abaddon is titled in metaphorical honor of the seasons. It's called Autumn of the Seraphs, and I just reviewed it for XLR8R. And it, as is always the case with Pinback, is stellar.
Here's a piece of my mind on the subject from the XLR8R review, due on the shelves in a couple months:
"Zach Smith and Rob Crow haven't fucked up yet and never will, because they have sick chops and instincts so pop they might as well be branded by Bubblicious. While Autumn of the Seraphs might not overcome their previous Summer in Abaddon, it is stacked with immersive nuggets. 'From Nothing to Nowhere' is a flawless exhibit of what they can do with a breakneck tempo, while 'Barnes' shows off their gift for math funk."
You can read the rest when XLR8R's 110 issue hits the stands, but for now here is an MP3 of the aforementioned single "From Nothing to Nowhere," one of the band's best songs and a good indication of where the new disc is headed. Enjoy the listen, read Morphizm's content on the San Diego triad below, and don't forget to mark September 11 on your calendar. For a good reason, this time.
