DJ Spooky Parties With Trojan, Nov. 29th!
A few months ago, I wrote a sweet piece for Wired on Trojan Records' anniversary, as well as its series of repurposed compilations assembled by standouts like the mighty DJ Spooky, Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood, Lee Scratch Perry and others. It was a blast and a half, but not as much fun as the in-depth Q&A I had with Spooky about dub, technoculture, mashups and postmodernism. The dude has brains and talent to spare. So it's cool to see him hitting the decks for Trojan again on a new compilation called Creation Rebel, and throwing a party to celebrate it. For those lucky enough to live in NYC -- before it goes underwater -- do not miss this throwdown. It's going to bounce nice nice. Details from an email Spooky sent out today:
"Hey people - I'd like to extend an invitation to you all to come check out the release party for my Trojan Records project. If you're not aware of it, Trojan Records is one of the oldest Jamaican record labels out there, and they gave me access to their archive for this remix project. I've remixed some of my favorite old school reggae tunes. On Creation Rebel there's stuff from some of my favorite dub poets like Mutabaruka, to Barrington Levy's classic "Under Mi Sensi" to hip-hop versions of Bob Marley (yep, he did a record with Trojan waaay back in the 1960s!)...The party is with several friends of mine from the South Asian scene as well, so it'll be old school reggae, Indian Electronica, and a lot of other styles in between. Not to mention there'll be various free give-away stuff from Trojan like DJ slipmats, old school reggae mix CDs and alot of stuff in between. 9-10 pm is the free Finlandia sponsored "Rebel Mango" drink we've created for the event. Come EARLY!!! I go on at midnite! Come on out!!!"
