Joe Jackson Is Not Looking Sharp
It's Tuesday, but it's not super. Neither is Joe Jackson's new effort Rain, which I reviewed for Metromix recently. The mind behind the excellent "Look Sharp!" and "Sunday Papers" could use more cowbell, less piano weepers. To wit:
Joe Jackson
Rain
Unless you're a Jackson loyalist, "Rain" will probably make you long for the days of "Look Sharp!" Sure, tracks like the rumbling "Citizen Sane" and the charging "Invisible Man" boast the Berlin transplant's usual wit and head-bobbing tempo. But the cheesy sentimentality of weepers like "Too Tough" and "Wasted Time" are custom-made for Muzak. The open-hearted finale "A Place in the Rain" wraps things up on a positive emotional note, but too many inconsistent time signatures doom this experiment. Maybe it was all that time Jackson spent in the cabaret scene, or all the time he's now spending back in Berlin, but either way "Rain" is a rather dry experience... MORE @ METROMIX
