Georgia Power Promotes Energy-Efficient LED Lighting

Georgians looking to convert their lighting can do so more cheaply this April.

Energy provider, Georgia Power has joined with supplier Home Depot to hand off CFLs and LEDs at a 25 to 50 percent discount for those looking to quickly slash energy consumption from less efficient lights by 75 percent.

“Helping our customers become more energy-efficient is a top priority for Georgia Power,” spokesperson Brian Green told SolarEnergy. “One of the ways we achieve this goal is through our portfolio of energy efficiency programs created to help customers save money, use energy efficiently and help the environment.”

The energy-efficient LED and CFL incentives are part of Georgia Power’s Lighting and Appliance Energy Efficiency program “to help customers save money and energy,” Green added. The Energy Star certified products are clearly marked on the shelves, and there isn’t a wasteful paper trail of coupons or mail-in rebates involved. Home Depot customers can also freely recycle broken CFLs, which contain too much mercury to be traditionally disposed. Everything comes at a price! Of course, with the price of LEDs dropping, these new lights carry even less of a price.

The initiative itself comes at a bright time for Georgia Power, which this month is also seeking bids for the development of 495 megawatts of solar generation tentatively planned to go online in 2015 or 2016. Let’s hope those years render 2013′s blowout solar boom a distant memory for Georgia, and everywhere else.
